He received his earliest training at the St. Jakobskerke in Antwerp before becoming employed as a violinist with the Thurn und Taxis court, spending much of his time beginning in 1723 in Frankfurt. In 1725 he entered the service of Charles of Loraine where he became concertmaster in 1744 and maître de chapelle in 1746. A good friend of Pierre van Maldere, de Croes was responsible for the excellent reputation of the Brussels court ensemble. His works include five operas, 53 Masses, 63 motets, 32 symphonies, six concertos for two violins, five concertos for flute, 12 quartets, six violin duos, and 12 violin sonatas (six published in Paris as Op. 1 in 1743), as well as numerous smaller chamber works. Much of his sacred music has been lost.
