“There comes a time when silence is betrayal.” - Martin Luther King Jr.
We have time and time again been outraged by the racism & injustice we have witnessed in our community. We refused to stay silent, and reflected on what role we as cake artists can play as agents for change. We live in a world of cross-mediation of visual content that can motivate people to act. Art can serve as means to embrace, advocate for change, and direct reform. Among other advocacy efforts, we decided to also utilize our bakery to create this fully edible cake as means of artistic activism, in support of the movement for overdue justice & equality.
One thing I liked about this video was that throughout the progression of making this cake, the hand was brown, then white, then black. If you just saw the final product, you'd never know the layers underneath. In the end, it didn't matter what color it all was. It was the message that was important.
In the same way, it doesn't matter what color one's skin, eyes, or hair is. This diversity is what makes humankind so beautiful. In the end, we're all the same. It is time we are all treated this way: equal and beautiful.
