IRAQ | 3,400 babies delivered in Domiz in four years

Domiz Refugee Camp was established in 2012 in northern Iraq for Syrian refugees fleeing conflict in their homeland. The conditions in the camp were dire when it first opened. Women gave birth in their tents because they did not have access to healthcare, endangering the life of the mother and her baby. MSF responded to the need in the camp and set up a maternity unit with a 24-hour delivery room, triage department and sexual reproductive health services. In the past four years, the MSF team has delivered more than 3,400 babies and provided more than 27,400 gynaecological consultations. The project closed on 30 November 2017 and was handed over to local health authorities.
