@chrishandley2 years agoI'm definitely looking forward to your review of the SE version, it'd be nice to hear it through your Cornford. I like that you chose the Yngwie yellow one! Lovely looking guitars, not keen on the bigger truss rod cover and big synthetic bone nut though? ...2

@michaelcope95012 years agoClever to have this video ready to go. Way to catch some eyeballs given the SE blitz today, John! Smart. Also, I have a SS that I was fortunate to buy new from Paul Reed Smith himself. A real players’ guitar. Love it. ...1

@misterbeane2 years agoFWIW, I just bought a used 2021 Silver Sky (midnight rose, rosewood board) off of Reverb for $1900. After watching countless interviews with Paul Reed Smith himself, I remember that he prefers finding/using the "hardest possible nickel fret wire" he can find for PRS guitars, vs. going with stainless, so I knew the frets would basically be new. Sure enough, it's basically in unplayed/new condition (save for a few body dings, which I actually prefer anyways), and it's almost $1k off retail, and IMMEDIATELY after I started playing it I new I got an insane deal. It's the only strat-syle guitar that I've ever played that has 5 positions that are actually all usable, as almost all strats sound terrible in the mid/bridge pup positions, IMO (hell, that's why so many SSH strats exist). The pickups are insanely good and the guitar is extremely comfortable to play. ALL THAT SAID...it does have some shortcomings, as the neck is definitely beefier than most, and especially the newest 2021/22 RW-board models that have the new D-shaped profile. If you like a really fat neck, then you'll love the SS, but personally I wish it would've stayed closer in line with a modern C-shape. The radius feels amazing in the low frets, and I can understand why Mayer chose it, since it's closest to vintage 60s spec. I use 11s and like fairly high action, so I don't have any issues with fret-outs or playing high up on the board, but I could definitely see that happening with players that like super-low action and lower gauges. At the end of the day, I think the most important thing that most people that don't like the SS forget is that the SS is not really a strat, and it's NOT a guitar built for any strat player. It's a guitar that was built BY JOHN, FOR JOHN, to replace his vintage 60s strats on tour. He's got massive hands, so the big neck and uncommon neck radius is what HE likes, so I'd say if either of those are immediate deal breakers then yes, of course you'll want to look elsewhere. I REALLY like my SS, but I definitely will be hanging on to my strat as well, as they're just 2 very different animals altogether. ...

@EmilioConesa2 years agoI ended up getting a PRS Fiore and absolutely love it. I have plenty of Strats including a real 64’ but the Fiore is different. 10” radius, SSH great sounding pickups. PRS build quality is outstanding. 3

@PudWud12 years agoWhen you get to a certain quality and price point I think it comes down to just personal preference. I have a silver sky and absolutely love it. I took it to a guitar shop recently to compare against Fender Custom Shop Strats that were around the £4k mark and I preferred the Silver Sky. Others may prefer the Fender. That said, I really like the USA PRS guitars and own a 594. For me they are up there with Suhr and Music Man for best build quality production guitars. ...7

@llwonder2 years agoI bought my core silver sky off reverb last year and I didn’t buy used. Sweetwater was out of stock for more than half the year and I didn’t want to wait half a year for a guitar, so I went to reverb and bought from a small store in my state that sells new off of reverb ...1

@Spidouz2 years agoI’m a fan of PRS, fan of Strats and even fan of John Mayer. So I wanted to buy the Silver Sky for a while, but I’ve been very reluctant to the 7 ¼” radius. I’m used to my PRS Brent Mason with 25 ¼” scale, 10” radius and satin neck, so I would love the silver sky to be close to that. So when I saw the SE Silver Sky with a 8 ½” radius and satin neck, it looks even more attractive to me than the US version. The pickups look close, not 1:1, but still close. The SE pups seem to be a little bit warmer with a little bit more bite… The only downside, I don’t find the SE colors very exciting. They’re ok, but not super special, so worse case scenario, I would scrap it and repaint it with a color I prefer, and maybe swap the tuner by the US Silver Sky locking tuners, we can buy them from PRS online store for $189. Definitely I’m thinking of right now… ...

@danielelamworshipguitar2 years agoI own a 2019 Silver Sky and am definitely interested to see how everyone thinks the SE version compares. I’ve had 2 other PRS, a CE24 and a CE22, which I’ve sold because I just didn’t connect with them and really didn’t enjoy the pickups. So I wouldn’t consider myself a PRS fan (not a Mayer fan either just really like his guitar!) although I appreciate the quality and craftsmanship that goes into them. I still want to try a Vela but that’s all that interests me from PRS at the moment, aside from the new import SS. My 2 other electrics are a new Sparkle Jet 89 VS and a Duesenberg Starplayer TV and I feel like at this point in my playing and stylistically I’ve managed to land a perfect trifecta. All quite different but all fantastic to play and very inspiring. I’m looking forward to seeing what you think of the new SS SE. ...2

@jcp88692 years agoI ve got 2 silversky a mapple 2021 and rosewood 2018. Different pickups, different neck profile. The 5 positions sound so much well. Best guitars for me after 30y of playing. 1

@Arch_Stanton.2 years agoLooking forward to your review of the Silver Sky SE. Pretty sure It will be good guitar and you will like it. But then again, is it really worth the price?🤷♀ 1000€ here in the EU – I think it has too much Mayer extra. 1

@
@leandershah16172 years agoI just bought the Silver Sky 2 days back and it has been the best guitar I've ever played! I knew the SE was coming out so I purchased that too, but I know for a fact that I will keep the American made over the SE based on the fact that the nut looks odd and expected lower build quality. If you noticed, I never mentioned the tonal characteristics of either because the SE is surprisingly close to the core model. Just a little hotter on the SE's but nothing the volume pot/Boss GE-7 can't fix! ...

@TCMx32 years agoI think the newer pickups sound great & would probably be playing one today if I had those instead of the earlier ones which were just too hot/compressed for my taste. wrt comparing favorably to FCS, I mean nearly everything makes more sense than FCS to me, on paper anyway. Silver Sky is cheaper, K-Line is too and sounds nearly as good and plays better, SVL/Lentz/DPergo is a better guitar objectively especially wrt the wood they have, Suhr and Anderson are about the same price but are immensely more playable. In the end, the FCS guitars just sound better to me and it's infuriating. Especially my old 90s one just absolutely buries any other guitar Ive played in terms of tone & the only guitar that really sounds as good as that one to me is my SSC and it's doing something TOTALLY different. But that's just what my ears hear through my amps  ...1

@tres3112 years agoIf you want a good strat, buy an American strat used. Not breaking the bank, and you can just feel and see the quality and hear it! It has just a little magic that sets them a part. 800-1500 is reasonable. 2-2,5k is not worth it. Buy a PRS if you want a PRS. You can find a great strat and a great tele for less than the price of a silver sky ...1
